I wasn't sure what to make of Quito. I stayed in the New Town area which I think was a mistake in hindsight. It's massively Americanised and unsafe to walk at night. The Old Town was quite nice (and safer) but a decent walk from where I was - I only spent an afternoon there.
Was here for four days....a bit too long unless you do a few day trips. I only did the one in the end, to Cotopaxi volcano, which was just ok. A lot of travelling and the time spent on the glacier was a bit crap really. It's an impressive looking volcano though, the classic cone shape with the peak covered in snow and ice. Was worth it just to see it and the other volcanoes in the area - even the highest in Ecuador which was over 400km away.
The trip up the teleferico is worth it. Gives you a great perspective of the city when you aren't cloaked in cloud at the top. The peak is over 4,000m high so it can be a bit cold and walking is an effort if you haven't acclimatised.
